Finally getting around to uploading these photos from a couple of weeks back. My Necrons managed to scrape a victory in Purge the Alien against Sisters of Battle at 2500pts

Thursday 5 December 2013

Got my Dark Elves back out on Tuesday, and took on some Dwarves at 2000pts each.

Things started well, my Shades nipped up one flank and started charging artillery which quickly fell apart, and I managed to land a few casts of Pit of Shades onto the big Dwarf blocks holding the centre of the board.

What was left after Pit of Shades was soon charged by my Executioners who, boosted by Tullaris and a Hag with Witchbrew, handed out so much damage the Dwarf warriors were chased off the board in a single turn, and the Longbeards were cut down a few turns later.

End-game didn’t go so well, and a last stand on the hill by two units of Handgunners almost turned the game around when my Spearmen failed their charge and were stuck in the firing line.

In terms of actual victory points I wiped out my opponent, and managed to keep at least one model in everything except my Dark Riders. In terms of actual balance of power at the end though things were a lot closer than I’d have liked!

Shades were great, quickly dispatching the artillery saved me a lot of worry, and the Executioners really benefited from the super-frenzy but I feel I could have got the same effect from my Spears who had a Shadow Sorceress with Mindrazor so I may have to experiment with that.

Dark Riders I kind of threw away by charging a unit of Handgunners when sitting behind them with crossbows may have caused more damage, and they could then have moved round to screen the Spears after they failed the charge. I’ll be rethinking how I used them.

Sorceress with Executioners (still WIP)

Check me out with a proper Miniature Monday offering!

Painted up my Sorceress on Saturday as a bit of a break from the Executioners. Everything except the eyes are now done (though I may go back and mess around with a few details later), and it only took an afternoon.

Currently the plan is to run her as a high level (3 or 4) Life Sorceress to protect/resurrect my Executioners. They’ll probably be accompanied by Tullaris and a Witch Hag for all that nasty frenzy action. I’ve used this combination once, and it really does cut through units all over the place.

I really think the plastic Dark Elf Sorceress is one of the top GW models out there, and a great example of plastic beating finecast. I’m pretty tempted to pick up a couple more of these models some time and paint them in a pretty similar style but with different washes on the hair, as it’s such an eye-catching part of the model.

As I said the eyes are still to go. Eyes scare me a lot, not sure if I’ll try some kind of OSL glow effect or try and pick up a more detailed brush to do them normally. I’ve also had Micron Pens recommended for eye detail so may try and grab some of them for eyes.

Last Sunday was a 4-way free-for-all at 2000pts per player on a modified version of the Relic mission with my Necrons against Chaos Marines, Space Wolves and Orks.

Managed to squeeze in 5 turns, and I managed to pull off the win by grabbing two of the four Relics in turn 4 and keeping my hands on them (in no small part thanks to some devious unit placement) through turn 5.

Afraid the photos are a bit on the blurry side, I think my camera took a dislike to the lighting as it was having issues with the shadows around terrain.

Thursday 14 November 2013

Wednesday night was a 1500pt Eldar vs Dark Eldar showdown. We rolled Relic on Hammer and Anvil, I castled up behind some ruins while my opponent struck out towards the centre.

I got really lucky when he failed a couple of charges turn 2 against my tanks, allowing me to catch his Wyches in the open with Guardians and gun them down. Although I made a good push and forced him off the Relic some smart play by him kept me from claiming it for long, and an unlucky stunned result in turn 7 kept me from moving far enough to take Linebreaker with my lone surviving Guardian.

End result was a 2vp-2vp draw where I had First Blood and Slay the Warlord while my opponent got Slay the Warlord and Linebreaker.

I may have got carried away with upgrades, but after the fun I had parking my vehicles anywhere  I like I can’t imagine I’ll ever go without the Ghostwalk Matrix any time soon! Holofields are, as we all know, tremendous and Wave Serpents are almost impossible to kill.

I really like my Fire Prisms, but they weren’t a huge lot of use against Dark Eldar. They forced a lot of units to go to ground, but given the cost I’m not sure they justified it. Still, always worth taking to deal with Spehss Mehreens.

Saturday 2 November 2013

Wednesday was another Eldar day, where I took 1750pts against a great-looking Iron Hands army.

After getting jumped by two Dreadnoughts each with a pair of heavy flamers in Drop Pods in turn one I was on the back foot the rest of the game. My Wave Serpents and Jetbikes did a good job of dancing around the board using their jink saves to avoid the worst of the damage but there was little else I could do to kill enough Marines and tanks.

The game may have gone a bit one-sided but I had a good time getting my Eldar back on the table.
